An AOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) since 1936, Châteauneuf-du-Pape has been celebrating its 80th anniversary on various occasions all along the year. The 2016 harvest proclamation was yet another occasion to mark the event.
On 9 September 2016, for the official Harvest Proclamation, everyone within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine world gathered in the prestigious cellars of the old Popes’ castle to pay tribute to 80 years of a great adventure, being part of the appellation.
A tribute to the past, but also an occasion to meet up and work, as a collective body, to build the future of a well-known appellation, with a production overwhelmingly marketed out of France (3/4).
Quick retrospective of the event:
5pm Opening of a special harvest proclamation at the town hall! Local historian and writer Jean-Claude Portès presented his latest book tracing back the history of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AC.
7pm Thierry Sabon, President of the Fédération de Châteauneuf-du-Pape, invited a young wine-grower, Vincent Estevenin, to read the traditional Harvest Proclamation.
7.30pm Following this address and a tasting of the grapes, as tradition has it, the Mayor Claude Avril and his council – specifically gathered for the occasion- proclaimed that the harvest of the 2016 vintage could begin.
8pm This ceremony being over, the Echansonnerie des Papes wine brotherhood inducted 7 new honoured members, among whom, the President and the Curator of the Mucem museum of Marseilles: several wine estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape had given a financial contribution earlier on in the year towards the renovation of its Gallery of the Mediterranean.
9pm 140 happy guests took part in the “Great Dinner” that was served at the Verger des Papes restaurant.
