The 2025 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-pape

A rainy end to winter, a dry and hot early summer, and early harvests spread out over time… the 2025 vintage was far from easy for the winegrowers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Nevertheless, they produced very well-balanced white wines and red wines of great complexity with beautifully structured tannins.

IN THE VINEYARDS: A VERY EARLY VINTAGE
The 2025 growing season began with soils holding maximum water reserves, following a rainy autumn and winter (420 mm of cumulative rainfall). Budbreak occurred slightly earlier than average, although still a little later than in 2024.
Spring weather proved rather unpredictable. Sunny periods alternated with rainy spells until the end of June. The arrival of summer then brought a three-week heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 35°C for more than 14 days.
Wind and drought then set in during July. Veraison began around July 19, bringing the vintage back to a level of earliness similar to that of 2022.
At the beginning of August, a second heatwave, with daytime temperatures reaching 40°C, accelerated sugar accumulation in the berries. The 2025 growing season thus became the third warmest of recent years (after 2022 and 2023), and the vintage further increased its lead over 2024 to reach around ten days. Some white grape parcels were harvested from August 10 onwards, while the last black grape parcels were picked in early October. Storms in mid-August and September, along with the cooler temperatures marking the end of summer, allowed the berries to swell again in mid-and late-ripening sectors while waiting to be harvested at optimal maturity.

IN THE CELLAR: VERY PROMISING QUALITY POTENTIAL
The heatwave that occurred after veraison intensified berry colour but also limited their growth, resulting in high tannin potential and sometimes lower yields than expected.
Rain episodes in September spread the harvest dates over time, resulting in a wide range of aromatic profiles. Châteauneuf-du-Pape whites show lovely freshness; they are balanced and very precise. Their aromatic range extends from fresh fruit to exotic fruit, along with citrus and floral notes.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are harmonious, with fine and concentrated tannins. They display significant complexity with aromas of red and black fruits, liquorice, garrigue herbs and old rose. They are supported by a beautiful minerality, even a hint of salinity on certain parcels. Late-harvested cuvées will be enhanced by careful ageing suited to rich, complex wines with strong ageing potential. The more traditional cuvées are already very rounded with well-integrated tannins.

ON THE MARKETS
In 2025, 88,271 hl of Châteauneuf-du-Pape were produced, including 7,460 hl of white wine and 80,811 hl of red wine, from a declared vineyard area of 3,122 hectares and an average yield of 28.27 hl/ha. Representing 8.5% of declared volumes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape whites continue their upward trend in a global market that is particularly dynamic for great white wines.

ON THE CALENDAR
Ninety years ago, on May 15, 1936, the first six appellations d’origine contrôlée were officially created under the authority of President Albert Lebrun. The year 2026 will therefore feature numerous events celebrating the success of the first official sign of quality and origin. While some continue to question this designation, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape it is clear how much it has helped to establish a territory, its natural conditions, its traditions and a collective dynamic.
