The history of Château La Nerthe, in Châteauneuf-du-pape, has been punctuated by the transmission of knowhow from family to family since 1560. The Richard family became the owner of La Nerthe in 1985. Their mission is to reveal the great terroir of La Nerthe through cultivation methods that respect nature and a plot by plot approach showing a precision viticulture. Pioneer of organic farming in the appellation, the 57 plots of the estate (92 ha/ 228 acres) are Ecocert certified since 1998. They produce wine under the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vines of Côtes-du-Rhône and Côtes-du-Rhône Villages "Les Cassagnes de La Nerthe" are located 15km north of the appellation.
The 225 acres of La Nerthe vineyards are located in two single blocks around the castle. Our terroir is very typical : the vineyards run along a slope, at the top of which the vines dig their roots into soils of sandy-clay, on the surface there is a layer of the famous galets 'roulés' : large & round stones that originated in the Alps and were carried down to the Rhône by the ice age glaciers. These large pebbles store the heat during the day and release it at night.
