2018 is a special harvest with a chaotic spring, May has been bringing over 200 mm of rain with heavy sanitary pressure on the vineyards, my father told me he had never saw that… although we are organic, biodynamic and are more sensitive to these harsh conditions : we have been using biodynamics principles to address these conditions
- Extended us or biodynamic preparation 501 (silicate) to stimulate photosynthesis
- Herbal decoctions of horsetail and wicker : they help drying the vineyard and are boosting the effect of copper, hence helping us to reduce the dosis of copper in the vineyard.
From the beginning of June, we have been facing a very dry and hot summer
Due to mildew and the summer drought we are down 30% roughly on the average yield
We had thankfully invested this year on a vibrating sorting table and further to the sorting in the plot we have made a second sorting (four people including myself) to eliminate all dry grapes affected by mildew.
Thanks to a severe sorting and with the risk that we took to push maturities we are more then satisfied with the quality of the wines in 2018 which certainly do not have the concentration of vintages like 17 and 18 but are offering a great expression of the grapes and an excellent balance.
