Châteauneuf-du-Pape celebrates its 90th anniversary with 5 other A.O.C
Keen to defend the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its growing reputation, the winemakers of the cru will be at the origin of the current system of Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC).
Considering the 1919 law on appellations of origin too general, they decide that it is high time to implement stricter regulations intended to protect their wines.
On 4 October 1 923, the constituent general assembly of the ‘syndicat des propriétaires viticulteurs de Châteauneuf-du-Pape’ took place, with Baron Le Roy as president. Their example will soon be followed by the other wine-producing regions of France. Their work was crowned with success on November 21, 1933: the Court of Cassation confirmed the delimitation of the area and the production conditions of the appellation. On 15 May 1936, the decree of the appellation was published and Châteauneuf-du-Pape became the first AOC wine-growing area in France, followed by Arbois, Tavel, Monbazillac, Cassis and Cognac.
